Introducing the World Phoenix Project, a scalable memorial designed to symbolize hope and resilience in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The World Phoenix Project is more than just a memorial; it's a global design framework, powered by the idea that architecture can inspire healing and unity. This concept transcends boundaries, allowing people to create deeply personal tributes, whether in their own backyard or a public space, forging a global connection through shared remembrance.

The program envisions a multitude of diverse memorials connected by a common iconic unit: the phoenix block. These structural blocks are designed to fit together (tessellate) to create commemorative installations at a variety of scales and typologies (i.e. walls, enclosures, plazas). These structures can be adaptive to site specific conditions and made from a variety of local materials. The flexibility that the World Phoenix Project provides is conducive to a wide range of cultural, technological, and community specific needs and aspirations.

The pandemic's global reach and its indiscriminate impact on people from all walks of life align with the phoenix's universal symbolism. The phoenix is not bound by ideological or geographical boundaries, but rather, represents rebirth and renewal in almost every religion and culture, making it a fitting emblem for a global memorial project that seeks to memorialize transcendence from this world. In memorial design, tradition has often dictated the commemorating of specific individuals, significant events, or iconic places, even if such tributes are scattered across various locations. Yet, the emergence of the COVID-19 global pandemic introduced a chapter that transcended traditional norms.

This unparalleled crisis, which traversed every corner of the globe, claimed over seven million lives, leaving an indelible mark on our collective history. The pandemic emerged early 2020, quickly spreading from individual to individual, community to community, nation to nation. As hospitals were overwhelmed with sick patients, countries around the world instituted social-distancing protocols, mask mandates, and lockdown procedures. Though COVID-19 continues to evolve and spread, the introduction of the COVID-19 vaccine quelled surges around the globe.

The World Phoenix Project was conceptualized at the American Academy in Rome after intensive research of Italian cemetery design.

A powerful symbol of loss and resilience.
